Some of the suspects allegedly connected to the so-called Maycock/Smith drug operation cracked by law enforcement authorities from several jurisdictions are expected to be charged in Bahamian courts today.

They could face up to life in prison on multiple drug conspiracy and distribution charges. They could also face up to 20 years if convicted on money laundering counts.

Twenty-one suspects of the alleged drug cartel based in the Bahamas have been indicted. Some of the suspects face extradition to the United States.

U.S. Attorney General John Ashcroft said at a press conference in Washington, D.C. two days ago that, “They will answer in the courts of the same land where they profited from poisoning America’s children.”

Local police confirmed on Thursday that Melvin Maycock and Pedro Smith are Bahamian. They are accused of leading the group that transported hundreds of kilograms of cocaine by sea and air from the north coast of Columbia via Jamaica and the Bahamas to distribution cells in New York.

But police refused to release the names of the alleged 19 key associates who also face charges.

Fifteen of the suspects were arrested overnight Tuesday. Teams of camouflage-clad law enforcement authorities reportedly descended on several Bahamian islands, including New Providence, and caught some of the alleged drug traffickers off guard. Some of them were reportedly taken from their beds.

Mr. Ashcroft also said Wednesday that the indictments are the culmination of Drug Enforcement Administration efforts that started in 1999 to identify and dismantle the major trafficking organizations in the Caribbean.

He added that the multi-national operation to crack the smuggling ring has severely disrupted the entire Caribbean drug trade.

On Wednesday, Bahamian Commissioner of Police Paul Farquharson said from January 2003 to present, law enforcement officials in the Bahamas, working closely with their international partners, investigated the drug trafficking activities of five major drug trafficking organizations.

He said during that time, the Drug Enforcement Unit seized a total of 5,434 pounds of cocaine and 1,106 pounds of marijuana.

Officers also seized over the mentioned period, $825,432 cash, which were suspected proceeds of dangerous drugs, the Commissioner said.

He added that 19 persons have been charged before the courts for various drug trafficking offences.

Two additional persons are being sought.
