While some protest prayer and the Ten Commandments, the President, Congress, and
WASHINGTON-“Our goal is to bring attention to the need for prayer,” said Pastor Wiley Drake, co-organizer of the Congressional Prayer Conference (http://www.CongressionalPrayer.com). “We will not only pray at the National Prayer Breakfast on Thursday at the Hilton, we will be in Washington all week to pray in many government buildings.”
Drake, pastor of the First Southern Baptist Church of Buena Park, Calif., plans to lead prayer sessions every day this week at the Pentagon, House of Representatives, the U.S. Senate, and the new World War II Memorial being prepared for dedication in a few months. He has also been invited to pray in the offices of several members of the House and Senate.
Drake said prayers will be offered for President Bush, Congress, and the Supreme Court. He recently led a prayer vigil for Judge Roy Moore over removal of the Ten Commandments from a court building. He also led a boycott of Disney because of objections to moral issues, and worked to have President Bill Clinton excommunicated from the Baptist Church. Drake has had to fight many battles with local officials because his church provides services to homeless people, but local leaders want the homeless moved to another area away from tourists visiting Disneyland, just down the street from his Buena Park church building.
Members of the House of Representatives and the Senate have invited thousands of religious leaders from all over the U.S. and over 100 other countries to attend the National Prayer Breakfast at 8 a.m. on Thursday, to bring attention to the need for prayer.
“I will join with other prayer warriors as the Lord leads us to pray and give testimony to the whole world that God’s children are alive and praying publicly for our government leaders,” explained Drake.
Drake is an invited guest, and will be in attendance at the National Prayer Breakfast on Thursday at the Hilton Washington International Ballroom at 8 a.m. where President Bush is expected to speak to the 5,000 in attendance from all 50 states and more than 100 nations. Drake is the co-founder of the Presidential Prayer Team (http://www.PresidentialPrayerTeam.org).
“Historically the leadership of our Nation has turned to Almighty God for strength and guidance,” states the invitation sent to Drake and the other guests. “In this spirit, the United States Senate and the House of Representatives Breakfast Groups, which meet to deepen friendships, to pray and counsel together, inaugurated the National Prayer Breakfast to specifically seek the Lord’s guidance and strength as well as to reaffirm our faith and to renew the dedication of our Nation and ourselves to God and His purposes.”
The purpose of the National Prayer Breakfast is to encourage men and women throughout the United States and the world to recognize their privileges and responsibilities before God.
Similar events are held in all 50 states, hosted by public officials.
As a natural outgrowth of such gatherings, many people throughout the world are finding through the Spirit of Jesus a fellowship that is helping to build true community in the family of nations, according to the invitation.

“Here is my creed. I believe in one God, Creator of the Universe. That He governs it by His providence. That He ought to be worshiped. That the most acceptable service we render Him is doing good to His other children.” – Benjamin Franklin
“I speak as a man of the world to men of the world, and I say to you: Search the Scriptures. The Bible is the Book of all others to read at all ages and in all conditions of human life; not to be read once or twice or thrice through and then laid aside, but to be read in small portions of one or two chapters a day and never to be omitted by some overwhelming necessity.” – John Quincy Adams
“I am profitably engaged reading the Bible. Take all of this Book upon reason that you can, and the balance on faith, and you will live and die a better man.” – Abraham Lincoln
